Progression in Times Tables

Children need to learn their times tables in primary school. There is no way of getting away from it! They are essential when learning many new maths skills and concepts from the national curriculum, such as fractions, decimals, factors, ratio.

Not knowing the times tables puts additional strain on working memory when tackling such new concepts in maths. This will hinder the long term transition of the new facts to the long term memory.

The goal is instant recall, and to encourage children to achieve this by the end of Year 4 and there is now a Year 4 times tables test (the Multiplication Tables Check) to keep track of how children are getting on.

Here you will find a breakdown of how we teach tables at Lydd at some useful resources to support your child at home.
